Basic care for your Liver

We have already established the importance of the liver in our previous article called “Liver failure: Causes and Symptoms.” In this article, we’re going to enlist a few things you could do to take care of your liver.

  1. Drink responsibly:

Alcohol and the liver don’t go hand-in-hand. Let’s see why- when alcohol reaches the liver, it produces a harmful substance called acetaldehyde which has a damaging effect on the liver (can cause swelling or scarring of the liver), brain and stomach. Also, the liver needs water to process the alcohol which it draws from other sources as alcohol is a diuretic. Therefore, to protect your liver, drink responsibly.

  1. Regular exercise:

Regular exercise helps burn triglycerides and it is known to reverse and keep away non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.A healthy weight is important for a healthy liver.

  1. Diet:

A balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle that helps maintain a healthy weight are essential for a happy liver. There are certain foods that you could include in your daily diet to cleanse your liver.

  • Turmeric
  • Garlic
  • Apples
  • Cabbage
  • Almonds and Walnuts
  • Salmon
  • Tea
  • Spinach
  • Pumpkins, beetroots, and carrots
  1. Vaccination:

Vaccines are available for hepatitis A and B. These vaccines are safe and very effective in preventing these dangerous liver diseases. There is no vaccine available for hepatitis C. If you are not yet immunized against hepatitis A and B, talk to your doctor about whether you need it.

  1. Keep away from toxins:

Exposure to toxins can damage your liver cells. Chemicals present in insecticides, cigarettes, auto and diesel exhaust, aerosols, and some cleaning products can be damaging to the liver. Keeping away from certain foods that contain Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), artificial sweeteners, trans-fat, fried foods, and processed foods can further protect your liver from damage.

Apart from all these, there are some medicines that have substances that are harmful to the liver. Some medicines can cause liver damage if taken with alcohol. It is also important to be aware of interactions between medicines that can be harmful to the liver. That is why it is important to take medicines as prescribed by your doctor.
