Intercostal drain

Diabetes is a chronic health condition which occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces. This in turn, impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose or blood sugar. Without careful management, diabetes can lead to building up of sugar levels in the blood, which can increase the risk of dangerous complications, such as nerve damage, heart disease and kidney failure. While there is currently no cure for diabetes, the condition can be effectively managed with medication, proper diet and regular exercise.

Diabetic symptoms can sometimes turn into an emergency al of a sudden. Two major emergency conditions that can occur in diabetic patients are as follows:

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a medical emergency when blood sugar levels are too low, usually below 70 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) and without treatment; such low levels of blood sugar can lead to seizures and are life-threatening.

Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia is when blood sugar levels become too high because insulin is not present in the body or the body is not responding to the insulin that is present.
