Introduction

A patient in a medical state of unconsciousness for a longer period of time having complications due to severe injury or any medical condition which is said to be coma or prolonged unconsciousness. This is a situation of emergency where a patient is unable to wake up or not knowing what is happening around. It is the failure of neuronal system of the body. ICU is the only option for taking care of such patients as they are dependent on others for everything which is from cleaning to feeding etc. The facility of ICU can be created at home as taking care of such  patient is a challenge in its own.

How to create a Home ICU for Unconscious or Comatose Patients

At home ICU needs to be set up to take care of a comatose or unconscious patient where certain equipments are to be set up. The necessity of administering ICU is due to severity of the situation of  patient, so that the patient’s vitals are always monitored carefully. After a thorough analysis of  situation of the patient the doctor advices equipments to be used at home in a ICU. The list is discussed for better understanding:

• As the patient is unconscious or in Coma, the first equipment to be installed is the hospital bed. This bed is a combination of varied facilities like railings in the sides to alter the height as required. The bed is adjustable where the head can be raised to drain out excess fluid or blood from the brain. The hospital bed is very convenient for both patient and the care taker.
• 2.Cardiac monitor should be installed in home to monitor vitals regularly.The monitor should contain BP recording,pulse oximeter,ECG leads to monitor BP,SPO2,Heart rate and ECG continuously.
• In case of breathing issues, a ventilator can be used for a better oxygen supply to the lungs.
• To help the patient in coma with their bowels, Foley Catheter should be installed at home. The catheter will ease the passing out of urine along with recording the amount of urine passed. It is easy to be cleaned by any.
• Ryle’s tube,PEG tube,IV line,IV fluids are the other necessary things should be need in home ICU setup.

The above mentioned are the important equipment’s and other than these some other equipment’s can be kept in ICU at home if needed by the patient on the directions of the doctor.
